Description: Considered by ancient Central American cultures as the fruit of the gods, mamey sapote is oval-shaped, similar to a football, and is 3-8 inches in length. Its thick, woody skin is brown in color, and its flesh has an orange/reddish tint.
Mamey’s texture is creamy and sweet. Eat it raw or blend into milkshakes, smoothies, ice cream, and fruit bars. The melon’s flavor is reminiscent of almonds with the texture of an avocado.
Some consider the melon to be an aphrodisiac. Mamey sapote is high in vitamins A and C as well as in potassium. It is also an excellent source of dietary fiber.
Taste: Mamey has a creamy texture and a sweet pulp.
Selection: Pick firm fruit that is free of blemishes. When ripe the flesh should give slightly to a gentle squeeze. You can also look near the fruit’s stem for a small cut. If the flesh inside is an orange/red, it’s ripe.
Ripening: Expose the fruit to air at room temperature until the fruit softens a bit and the inner flesh is no longer green in color. Once ripe the fruit can be stored up to a week in the refrigerator.
Shelf Life: Once ripe, mamey can be refrigerated for 3 days.
